How We Compiled The List
When judging which ingredients actually boost testosterone levels, you look for the ingredients with real, robust, independent scientific backing.
Then you look to see if a supplement contains the right dose of those ingredients. A given substance may be incredibly potent at one serving size, and totally useless at another. It may be perfectly safe below a certain threshold, and side effect prone above it.
So, once we know the ingredients and respective doses we’re looking for, we start to think about how those ingredients might work together.
To get maximum effectiveness, we look to stack ingredients. By “stacking”, we mean combining ingredients and consuming them at the same time.
Some ingredients work in the same ways, so including all of them in the same stack would be pointless.
Others work together in synergy, amplifying each other’s good effects while downplaying their negative effects.
We have taken all of these things into account when compiling this list of the best (and worst) natural testosterone raising substances on the market.
Below you will find a brief explanation of the most effective test booster ingredients commonly found in supplements today. We have also noted their ideal dose range, as well as the ingredients that they should be stacked with for maximum effectiveness.
The Best Natural Testosterone Booster Ingredients
D-Aspartic Acid Calcium Chelate
D-Aspartic Acid is, in our opinion, the most important ingredient in any premium natural testosterone booster. Few ingredients match it in terms of effectiveness, reliability, and safety. It has a direct, deep effect on free testosterone levels, but without putting you at any elevated risk of side effects.
D-AA is an amino acid which regulates testosterone levels. More specifically, D-AA prompts the release of Luteinizing Hormone, which in turn signals the testes that they need to release more testosterone into the blood stream.
There are several studies which show D-AA as having a powerful positive influence on testosterone levels.
This study, for example, established that D-AA influenced serum testosterone levels through its effect on Luteinizing Hormone, with the researchers stating that, “in humans and rats, sodium D-aspartate induces an enhancement of LH and testosterone release.”
More impressively, this study, published in Advances in Sexual Medicine in 2012, looked at how D-AA supplementation affects free testosterone, seminal count, and seminal mobility. The results of this study were pretty convincing, with the researchers concluding the following: “We found that the supplementation of D-aspartate significantly increased the concentration and the motility of spermatozoa…Treatment of sub-fertile patients with sodium D-aspartate improved the number and the motility of the spermatozoa and consequently improved the rate of pregnancies of their partners.”
After doing extensive research, we have found that this is the most potent, easily absorbed form of D-AA. Very few supplements use this (much more expensive) form of D-AA, but some do. As this is a “best of the best” list, we had to specify.

Stinging Nettle Root
This one might sound a little out there, but trust us; this stuff has the potential to significantly increase free testosterone levels in otherwise healthy men.
Stinging Nettle Root influences testosterone levels through a very simple mechanism. Compounds in the plant, namely Lignans (a polyphenol), binds with a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG). Normally, SHBG binds with testosterone, essentially removing it from “circulation”. By binding with SHBG, the lignans in Nettle Root ‘takes the hit’ for testosterone, meaning that less testosterone ends up being bound to SHBG.
This in effect means higher free testosterone levels in the blood.
There have been few studies looking at Stinging Nettle Root’s effect on testosterone levels in humans. However, the ability of its constituent compounds to bind to SHBG has been well established.
This clinical trial found that Stinging Nettle Root extract was able to inhibit SHBG binding. The results found that its effectiveness was dose-related, with total binding inhibition occurring at higher doses.
Similarly, this trial found that the lignan component of nettle root has a profound effect on the binding ability of SHBG. The researchers in this trial found that “the lignan secoisolariciresinol…were demonstrated to reduce binding activity of human SHBG.”
Ideal Dose: 100mg – 500mg
Stack With: D-AA, Luteolin & Zinc
Luteolin is a flavonoid found naturally in the human diet. Typical natural sources of Luteolin include fruits and vegetables such as celery, carrots, green pepper, and several teas. It is found in great abundance in some leaves, but humans generally will not consume these products.
Luteolin has really grabbed our attention lately because it seems to be a powerful aromatase inhibitor. This means that it is thought to block the synthesis of the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for turning testosterone (or any androgen) into estrogen. Aromatase is the body’s hormone regulation backstop, preventing excess testosterone from building up int he blood.
Aromatase inhibition is a popular choice for professional bodybuilders who want to maximize free testosterone while preventing side effects from excess estrogen conversion. However, they usually do this using exogenous hormones, which is extremely dangerous in both the short and long-term.
Luteolin seems to offer a safer, more sustainable way of maximizing free testosterone levels by keeping estrogen conversion to a minimum.
But does it really work?
This extensive study looked at a large group of natural substances thought to act as aromatase inhibitors. They found that “Luteolin (5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxyflavone, 31) has shown strong [AI] activity in microsomal testing and cellular testing with JEG-3 cells”.
Similarly, this clinical trial found that “the flavonoids, coumestrol, luteolin and kaempferol also decreased aromatase enzyme activity”.
Ideal Dose: 50mg – 100mg
Stack With: Nettle Root & Zinc
Boron is not actually found in very many natural testosterone boosters today, but it should be.
It is without question one of the most reliable, effective yet side effect-free substances for raising free testosterone levels.
Numerous studies have found that daily Boron supplementation can have a positive influence on serum testosterone levels.
For example, this study, published in 2011, found that “Six hours supplementation showed a significant decrease on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)”.
The effects of this SHGB decrease were found to be pretty impressive:”After one week (in samples taken at 8.00 A.M, only), the mean plasma free testosterone increased and the mean plasma estradiol decreased significantly.”
Boron is also thought to have some positive effects on general health and longevity.
Ideal Dose: 5-10mg
Stack With: Zinc, Vitamin D3 & D-AA
Zinc is a standard ingredient in natural testosterone boosters of all kinds. If you’ve done any research into natural testosterone-boosting agents, then you will have certainly come across zinc.
A typical testosterone supporting stack for beginners is ZMA, which is a combination of Zinc, Magnesium Aspartate, and B6.
These sdtacks don’t really do much, but that doesn’t mean we should discount zinc.
Zinc is necessary for the production of Luteinizing Hormone, which in turn is necessary for the testes to produce sufficient quantities of testosterone.
Many men don’t consume anywhere near enough zinc in their natural diet, so they can’t maximize their own natural testosterone production. Supplementation can therefore have an almost instantly meaningful effect on testosterone levels.
For example, this trial found that zinc supplementation benefited men who had issues with fertility. The researchers noted that zinc supplementation led to very rapid and meaningful increases in free serum testosterone levels.
These effects are not limited to older people, people with fertility issues, or those with a mild zinc deficiency. Healthy, active, extremely athletic individuals can benefit enormously from zinc supplementation.
One study found that a zinc supplement was able to keep testosterone levels high despite subjects (who were elite wrestlers) being placed under an extremely excessive workload. Free T-levels declined in the placebo group.
The researchers ultimately concluded the following: “Findings of our study demonstrate that exhaustion exercise led to a significant inhibition of both thyroid hormones and testosterone concentrations, but that 4-week zinc supplementation prevented this inhibition in wrestlers. In conclusion, physiological doses of zinc administration may benefit performance.”
Ideal Dose: 25-40mg
Stack With: Magnesium, Vitamin D3, and D-AA
Magnesium is often paired with Zinc when taken as a supplement for the purposes of raising testosterone levels.
That’s because the two elements work extremely well together for that purpose, in large part because so many men are deficient in magnesium in the West today.
In fact, according to some estimates, magnesium deficiency is the second most common deficiency in developed countries.
There remains some debate about the exact mechanism at play here, but it seems fairly certain that magnesium has a significant and direct effect on serum testosterone levels, which in turn has a significant effect on physical performance, well-being, and lean muscle mass.
One particularly notable study found that magnesium “increases free and total testosterone values in sedentary and in athletes. The increases are higher in those who exercise than in sedentary individuals.”
Magnesium was able to induce greater increases in free testosterone in sedentary individuals than the increases observed among people who exercise but who did not take a magnesium supplement. Considering that exercise is one of the most anabolic things you can do, that’s pretty damn impressive.
Correcting a magnesium deficiency at the same time as any zinc deficiencies you might have will no doubt have a serious effect on your testosterone levels.

Stack With: Zinc, D-AA & Vitamin D3
Vitamin D supplementation is a good idea for practically everybody.
The benefits of upping your Vitamin D levels are numerous and varied, from improving energy levels and cognition, to increasing bone strength, reducing the risk of heart disease, and enhancing subjective well-being.
Vitamin D is actually not like other vitamins; it acts much more like a hormone in the human body. It also happens to be a powerful trigger for testosterone production.
This study found that Vitamin D supplementation was able to dramatically increase free testosterone levels over the course of a year compared to placebo. “Compared to baseline values, a significant increase in total testosterone levels, bioactive testosterone, and free testosterone levels were observed in the vitamin D supplemented group.”
Vitamin D deficiency is rife in the modern world since so many of us spend most of our days indoors. Even those of us who are not technically deficient in Vitamin D will almost always have sub-optimal levels.
The current recommended daily intake of vitamin D (about 400IU) is extremely low in our opinion. While the safe upper limit is currently said to be 4,000IU in the US and Canada, it seems that the actual safe upper limit is closer to 10,000IU.
For the purposes of correcting a deficiency and maximizing testosterone levels, we recommend taking 5,000IU of high quality Vitamin D3 per day. D3 is much more readily used by the body than D2, so always opt for this form of Vitamin D when possible.

Ideal Dosing Schedule
The ingredients and doses contained in a natural testosterone booster are of course the most important considerations when judging if a supplement is right for you.
However, the way you take a supplement can also change how effective it is.
If your biggest concern is raising your testosterone levels in a sustainable, lasting way, then it’s important to consider the dosing schedule of a supplement before purchasing.
Some supplements provide everything in one single capsule.
In our opinion, this is not the most effective way to go about raising your testosterone levels if you care at all about keeping your T levels at their new, higher level.
Ideally, the supplement you use should divide up their total serving into 2-4 equal chunks. The serving sizes should be enough to make a very slight difference on their own, while the total daily serving sizes of the ingredients should be within the ideal serving sizes laid out above.
That way, your testosterone levels are kept in check around the clock. There is no big spike followed by a 23 hour lull. There is no hard kick followed by an entire day of nothingness.
By splitting up your dosage throughout the day, your T levels are given a little kick in the morning, then another little boost at lunch, and another before you go to sleep.
You are essentially giving your T levels a push first thing in the morning and then making sure you keep the momentum going all day long.
That is smart supplementation.
